I still like saxophones, go fuck yourself.ĭANZIG 1 IS WIDELY CONSIDERED TO BE HIS BEST ALBUM. If I'm wrong and that's not a saxophone in the chorus then. it serves as proof to anyone who says they hate saxophone in rock music that they're wrong. The entire album is dripping with swagger, but there's something about that particular song where the swagger and the attitude shine through more than the other tracks. Probably Glenn's best crooner on that album, as well. It's heavy without relying on overly distorted "metal" tones. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE SONG FROM DANZIG 1, AND WHY? It's a miracle that I didn't decide to hate it right then and there because my dad liked it, too, but you can't deny a great record when you hear it. I also remember my dad hearing me blasting it and coming into my room because he dug it, too. After a few listens of Danzig 1, I was hoooked like the first time I heard the Misfits. I had the Samhain albums and I liked them, but they didn't engage me the way the Misfits did. I remember thinking, "This isn't punk, what the fuck?!" But after some more thought I decided that not being punk to the punks was probably more punk than just being punk. WAS THE IMPACT IMMEDIATE? OR A SLOW BURN?Īt first I was a little taken aback by it. Mostly because it sounded horrible but somehow made me want to keep listening.ĭESCRIBE THE FIRST TIME YOU HEARD DANZIG'S SELF-TITLED SOLO ALBUM. Evilive came out in '87, I think, and it was the first "new release" by any of Danzig's bands I bought - I never had any money so my friends just dubbed their copies for me - and I was obsessed with it. My memory is hazy, but I had some dubbed Misfits tapes around '85/'86 and then I got the copy of Thrasher with Danzig on the cover and that kinda solidified it all for me. In the mid-Eighties the default music for skaters was punk and Thrasher magazine was my gateway. Growing up in Virginia Beach skate and surf culture was just sort of the norm, so all the kids in my neighborhood were into skateboarding. I had been introduced to the Misfits by an older cousin who was into skateboarding and punk. I was really young, probably about 10 or 11. WHEN DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER GLENN DANZIG? On the eve of the 30th anniversary of "Danzig 1," we caught up with the musician to talk about his lifelong passion for Danzig's music, what it was like meeting the man himself, and what he admires and loves about those classic songs. More recently, when recording Converge's last album, 2017's The Dusk in Us, Newton played an iconic Aria Pro bass previously owned by original Danzig band member Eerie Von, an experience that he found "amazing" and inspirational. In 2007, Evil Elvis returned the favor by inviting Doomriders to open for him on tour. With his other band Doomriders, in which he sings and plays guitar, Newton has not only explicitly tried to channel Danzig with numerous songs, but also covered the ripping cut "Possession" off Danzig's landmark self-titled debut album. Before they tour on that album, though, it would be great to see Thursday toss a handful of the rarely seen Common Existence cuts into a show somewhere along the way.Ever since Nate Newton first heard the Misfits as a kid growing up around Virginia Beach's skate and surf scene, Glenn Danzig has played a big part in the Converge bassist's life. The band is set to hit the studio in June to record a followup to Common Existence with producer Dave Fridmann. For fans who catch the band on their routine trips around the New Jersey area, though, Thursday’s setlist is becoming stale. A few missteps aside (such as guitarist Tom Keeley slipping off-key or Rickly leaving out blocks of lyrics), Thursday was fantastic and an absolute must-see live show for anyone who has yet to see the New Brunswick six-piece. It hurts not to see more songs from Common Existence, such as the aforementioned “Subway Funeral” or “You Were the Cancer”, the latter of which is arguably one of the band’s best songs to date. With the last-minute removal of the rarely seen “Subway Funeral”, Thursday’s song selection was as predictable as ever the band has stuck to a similar setlist for each of their tours since the release of A City by the Light Divided in 2006. Once made, these aubergines keep well, too, for up to three weeks in the fridge, if covered in oil, which gives you plenty of time to experiment. They’re also incredibly delicious piled into a pitta with as many fresh herbs as you can fit in. These work well with all sorts of meals, either as a starter, or as part of a spread, or just as a main course with plain rice. Yotam Ottolenghi’s baby aubergines with amba and tahini. To serve, arrange the peppers on top of the lamb, drizzle over two tablespoons of the salsa and serve with the rest of the salsa on the side. Meanwhile, put all the salsa ingredients and a half-teaspoon of salt in the small bowl of a food processor, blitz until almost smooth, then transfer to a bowl. Roast for two and a half to three hours, giving the mix a gentle stir once halfway, until the lamb is tender and falls apart easily. Transfer the lamb mix to a large, high-sided roasting pan in which it fits snugly, then cover tightly with foil. Scrape this mix into the bowl, add the cinnamon, preserved lemon, onions, garlic, fennel, potatoes, romano and çarli peppers (if using), and mix well. Put the ground fennel and cumin seeds, kashmiri chilli, jarred peppers, tomato paste and red chilli in the large bowl of a food processor, add a tablespoon of salt and a good grind of black pepper, then blitz smooth. Put a large frying pan on high heat and, once smoking, sear the lamb in batches for two to three minutes on each side, then return to the bowl. In a very large bowl, mix the lamb with the oil, to coat. For ease, we’ve swapped the traditional Turkish pepper paste for jarred red peppers, which do an equally good job of imparting a pepper flavour that really benefits from the long cooking.ġkg lamb neck, cut into 5cm chunks 2 tbsp olive oil 3 tsp fennel seeds, toasted and roughly crushed in a mortar 3 tsp cumin seeds, toasted and roughly crushed in a mortar 2 tsp ground kashmiri chilli, or regular paprika 1 x 450g jar red peppers, drained (260g) 40g tomato paste 1 red chilli Fine sea salt and black pepper 1 cinnamon stick 1 preserved lemon (40g), pips discarded, flesh and skin finely chopped 3 onions, peeled and cut into quarters (540g) 2 garlic bulbs, 1cm cut off the top of each, to expose the cloves inside 1kg fennel bulbs, stems trimmed and discarded, then each bulb cut into 6 wedges 600g baby potatoes, peeled and left whole 6 small romano peppers (300g) 6 çarli peppers (300g), or use 300g more romano peppersįor the preserved lemon salsa 50g coriander leaves 60ml olive oil 2 preserved lemons (60g), pips removed 2½ tbsp lemon juice This dish, which is inspired by Turkish pepper paste-marinated lamb and features tender, fall-apart meat, melting potatoes and sweet onion and fennel wedges, is well worth the wait. In recent times, the number has come to recognise defensive midfielders as well. Celebrated Barcelona midfielder Xavi, however, is a notable exception, as he wore the No.6 during his time at Camp Nou. The No.6 shirt is also commonly worn by a centre-back, such as England legend Bobby Moore. Zinedine Zidane, a playmaking central midfielder, famously wore the No. Number 5 shirtĬentre-backs typically wear the No.5 shirt, with some notable examples including ex-Barcelona captain and one-club man Carles Puyol, Fabio Cannavaro and Franz Beckenbauer. Number 4 shirtĬentral defenders or defensive-minded midfielders are given the No.4, such as Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos and Arsenal legend Patrick Viera. The No.3 shirt is also reserved for a defender, this time for a left-back. Ashley Cole, Paolo Maldini and Roberto Carlos are notable examples. Gary Neville wore the shirt during his long career at Old Trafford with Manchester United, along with Cafu and Ivan Cordoba. Number 2 shirtĭefenders – though more specifically, right-backs – usually don the No.2 shirt. Ex-Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas has famously worn the number, as well as the likes of Oliver Kahn and Gianluigi Buffon. The No.1 shirt is most typically reserved for the first-choice goalkeeper at a club and is almost never given to any outfield player. For example, an 80-lb cover stock is much heavier than 100-lb text paper. It depends on the size and purpose of the paper in determining its type and not based on values, for higher values do not always equate to heavier or thicker paper. It sorts the papers into bond, book offset, points, tag, index, and cover. What do you mean by basis weight? It is the weight of 500 sheets of paper in its basic unit uncut size. US basis weight is not a common type of measurement and can be confusing because similar paper can result in different values as based on basis weight applied while manufacturing the paper. Teams using this tactic often look to hit their opponents on the counter-attack or end up playing a long ball game, hoping that their striker can hold up the ball and bring others into play. They also need to have great stamina as the odds are that they'll be chasing the opposition the whole of the match.Īs you can imagine, the likelihood of you scoring using this style of place is very slight and as such it is mainly used in specific circumstances or one-off games. To successfully implement this tactic, you need disciplined players who are willing to fight for the team and battle for every ball. With the three midfielders lying right in front of the centrebacks and the lone striker putting pressure on the opponent's midfielders, it then makes it very difficult for the opposition to score. This allows the two full-backs to tuck in alongside the centrebacks and the two wingers drop in to either side of them, effectively creating a back six. Teams usually line up in a 4-5-1 if they are looking to use this tactic. You allow them to play in front of your defence and low-lying midfield, only engaging when they come too near or venture into dangerous positions. The idea behind this style of play is to limit the space and time your opponents have on the ball. While this sacrifices their own attacking outlet and gives their opponents the initiative, it can be a very useful tactic to use if you are looking to keep a clean sheet or protect a lead in a match. When teams park the bus, they pull everyone back and try to limit the opposition to as few opportunities as possible. One of the soccer tactics Jose Mourinho used to line up against Pep Guardiola's teams was to "park the bus" and hope to hit them on the counter. This is because coaches have set their teams up to either defend deep and attack on the counter, or press high in the hopes of winning the ball back in a more dangerous area. While it was very much in vogue a few years ago, recent tactical innovations have seen it decline in popularity. When it doesn't, it can be very frustrating for the players if their coach keeps demanding they replicate a style of play when they are just not able to. When it works, Tiki-Taka can be an absolute delight to watch. The keeper, too, should be quick off their line to sweep behind the high line defence, and also be adept at passing the ball around confidently. Your defenders should also be good on the ball and at times push up into midfield or overlap past the winger on the flanks. The key to this tactic is creativity, technical skills, and fluidity.Īs well as the right personnel to play it, of course. Their role is to stretch the opposition, make intelligent runs, and drag the opponent's defenders out of position. In addition to the technical and creative midfielders this system demands, you also need intelligent and agile forwards. Tiki-Taka involves keeping possession using short passes with all players constantly on the move - interchanging positions and overloading the opposition's midfield. While Tiki-Taka has its origins in the Dutch team of the 70s, it was Pep Guardiola's Barcelona team of 2008 – 2012 that made this style of play famous around the world. In addition, it also improves the players' tactical knowledge and understanding of the game.Ĭheck out the link below for an in-depth guide on the most common formations: While many teams stick to just one over the course of the season, it’s well worth working on a couple so that you can vary things up depending on your opposition. Once you have had a think about the players at your disposal and how you want the team to play, you can then start coaching the formation in your training sessions. Similarly, it’s very hard to make a single striker system work if you don't have the right player up front to slot the ball in the back of the net. Understanding each formation allows you to select the one that best suits your squad.įor example, it’s no good forcing your players to play a 3-5-2 if you don't have the right type of players to fill in on the flanks. While some formations allow you to dominate possession or overwhelm the opposition on the wings, others are more defensive and counter attacking in nature. Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of each formation will go a long way to deciding what you and your players do as a team and what tactics you use. Before looking at various advanced soccer tactics you can implement as a coach, one of the most important tactical decisions you need to decide on is which formation you’ll use. |
